Built-in Wardrobe and Kitchen Cabinet Cost Malaysia 2026

Built-in wardrobes and kitchen cabinets are the highest-value carpentry items in most Malaysian home renovations. Here is what they cost in 2026, by material grade and size.

Custom carpentry - wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV consoles, study desks, and storage units - accounts for a large share of most Malaysian home renovation budgets. Prices vary enormously depending on whether you choose a furniture retailer, a custom carpenter, or an integrated design-and-build contractor. This guide covers what bespoke built-in joinery costs from Sun Synergy Contracts, a CIDB G4-licensed renovation contractor based in Petaling Jaya, in 2026.

Built-in Wardrobe Cost Malaysia

Wardrobe pricing is quoted per linear foot (LF) of external width, for a full floor-to-ceiling unit.

Material gradeCost per linear foot (floor-to-ceiling, supply and install)
Melamine (basic, 18mm local board)RM 250 - RM 450 per LF
Melamine (premium, imported board, soft-close hardware)RM 450 - RM 700 per LF
PVC veneer or laminate frontRM 550 - RM 800 per LF
Lacquer finish (spray-painted, full flush door)RM 700 - RM 1,100 per LF
Solid wood veneerRM 900 - RM 1,500 per LF

A typical Malaysian master bedroom wardrobe running 10 feet wide, floor-to-ceiling with swing doors, soft-close hinges, and an internal layout of hanging, shelving, and drawers costs:

  • Mid-range melamine: RM 5,000 - RM 7,500
  • Lacquer finish: RM 8,000 - RM 12,000
  • Solid wood veneer: RM 10,000 - RM 16,000

Walk-in wardrobe systems (island unit, perimeter shelving, internal lighting) start at RM 18,000 for a medium-specification 3x3 metre room and can reach RM 60,000+ for premium finishes with integrated lighting and a feature island.

Kitchen Cabinet Cost Malaysia

Kitchen cabinets are priced per linear foot for base cabinets and wall cabinets separately, as the construction depth and weight-bearing requirements differ.

MaterialBase cabinet (per LF)Wall cabinet (per LF)
Melamine (local board)RM 350 - RM 600RM 250 - RM 450
Melamine (imported board, soft-close)RM 600 - RM 950RM 450 - RM 700
PVC finishRM 750 - RM 1,100RM 550 - RM 850
Lacquer finishRM 950 - RM 1,500RM 700 - RM 1,100
Solid wood (teak, oak)RM 1,400 - RM 2,500RM 1,100 - RM 2,000

A standard Malaysian kitchen with 8 feet of base cabinets and 6 feet of wall cabinets using mid-range melamine and soft-close hardware typically costs RM 9,000 - RM 15,000 for cabinets only, excluding countertop, sink, and hob. See our kitchen countertop cost guide for countertop pricing.

What Determines the Price

Board material. Moisture-resistant (MR) particleboard is the baseline for Malaysian kitchens. HMR (high moisture resistant) board and imported brands such as Egger or Kronospan add RM 50-150 per linear foot but last significantly longer in humid Malaysian kitchens.

Door finish. Melamine (printed pattern or solid colour) is the most affordable. PVC wrapping allows curved profiles and a seamless edge. Lacquer (spray-painted) produces a premium flush look but shows fingerprints more readily. Solid wood adds warmth but requires maintenance.

Hardware. Soft-close hinges and drawer runners add roughly RM 15-30 per door or drawer but are strongly recommended - they protect the cabinet box joints and reduce noise. Blum and Hettich (Austrian brands) carry a premium over local hardware but come with a lifetime guarantee.

Internal fittings. A standard wardrobe quote typically includes a basic internal layout (1 hanging rod, 2 shelves). Pull-out drawers (RM 200-400 each), trouser racks (RM 250-500), internal LED lighting (RM 500-2,000 for a full wardrobe), and pull-out shoe racks all add to the total.

Furniture Retailer vs Custom Carpenter vs Contractor

OptionProsCons
IKEA / furniture retailerLower cost, fast deliveryStandard sizes only; you manage installation and any fit issues
Local custom carpenter (direct)Custom sizes, lower costQuality varies; limited accountability if something goes wrong post-installation
Design-and-build contractorOne contract covering cabinets, countertop, tiling, and electrical; design-ledHigher total cost than a direct carpenter; not suitable for cabinet-only jobs under RM 8,000

For most renovation projects in the Klang Valley, the total joinery scope (wardrobe, kitchen, TV console, study desk) is large enough that using a design-and-build contractor makes sense. We provide a single itemised quote covering all carpentry, with the same team managing the construction sequence, so the kitchen tiles, countertop, and cabinets are all installed in the right order.
